Classic Korean Steamed Rice Cake Recipe (Tteok)-A Traditional Treat

Ingredients

Instructions

1. Begin by soaking the rice in cold water for at least 2 hours.
2. Meanwhile, prepare the mozuku seaweed by cutting it into small pieces and adding it to a bowl of cold water. Let it soak while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
3. Once the rice has finished soaking, drain it and add it to a pot with 2 cups of warm water. Bring the water to a boil and let the rice simmer for about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
4. Take the soaked mozuku seaweed and add it to another pot. Pour 1 cup of cold water into the pot and cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly until it has reduced to a thick consistency. Remove from heat and set aside.
5. Now it’s time to make the tteok! Take the cooked rice and mung bean powder and mix them together. Add the cooked mozuku seaweed, sesame oil and sesame seeds. Stir everything together.
6. Grease a steamer with sesame oil and place the mixture inside. Steam the tteok for about 10 minutes.
7. Once done, take out of the steamer and let it cool. Then enjoy your delicious tteok!

Tips

Tteok tastes best when served warm, so be sure to steam it just before serving. You can also add other ingredients such as chestnuts, pumpkin or sweet potatoes to make different variations of tteok.
